Zaha Hadid is an architect who consistently pushes the boundaries of architecture and urban design. Her work experiments with spatial quality, extending and intensifying existing landscapes in the pursuit of a visionary aesthetic that encompasses all fields of design, ranging from urban scale through to products, interiors and furniture. Zaha Hadid’s Aqua table is a large-scale dining/conference table with an enigmatic and flowing shape evocative of a liquid form frozen in time or an organic body flowing within space that implies motion by adopting the dynamic gestures of liquid to form a continuous surface. The Aqua table creates the impression of a pool of water flying in the air. This is achieved through the skillful use of the translucent silicon gel in the tabletop. This material not only has an exceedingly smooth surface but also, due to its water like quality, draws the viewer in to explore what is beneath the surface of the silicone. They see the contours formed in the table’s top, which appear as deep pools of colour, creating a beautiful visual effect. Zaha Hadid succeeds in creating a dynamic interaction between the user, the piece and the environment.
